The MLS Cup final took place over the weekend, with the Canadian Team, the Vancouver Whitecaps, taking the big stage for the first time in their history. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be, but it was still a great season from them and loads to be proud of. Elsewhere, we discuss some of our boys in Europe and how their weeks went. A big week in Canadian Soccer as the Vancouver Whitecaps have qualified for their first MLS Cup final appearance. They handled San Diego quite well and will now play Messi's Inter Miami. In this episode, I break down the Western Conference Final and preview the MLS Final itself. Canada brings an end to our international windows for the year, and it's with a win against Venezuela. Not without its fair share of talking points, however, still wasting chances, injuries and red cards are plaguing the squad at the moment. Man oh man, in another post-season twist for the first time in SEVEN seasons, Forge will not be playing in the final game of the season. Something that you would think is rather shocking, having gone undefeated for much of the season. But it will be Cavalry making the trip to Ottawa on November 9th to fight for the North Star Cup. Yes, the hunt for the North Star Cup is BACK as we officially kicked the playoffs off, starting with the game at the Wanderers Ground between Halifax Wanderers and York United. It was a back affair for both clubs and a game of fine margins that had to be decided on penalties for just the second ever time int the CPL. So let's see what went right and what went wrong, let's talk about it!

The Canadian Men's national team made their long-awaited return to the Stade Saputo to take on Australia to kick of the October window. The crowd was UP for it, witha great atmosphere befitting of this return. The players were up for it too, but sadly, it didn't translate into a result on the pitch. Some of the same issues reared their head with us not being able to capitalize while on top. It's something the program has struggled with for a long time now... but time is running out to fix it between now and the World Cup. Regardless...

Well, sadly, the Cinderella run of Vancouver FC comes to an end in the Canadian Championship final. They can still be proud of their effort on the night and of course their huge upsets throughout the tournament. For the Whitecaps, it's a 4-Peat, being the second club to do in after TFC. For the first time EVER, Canada has beaten 2 European sides back-to-back on European soil! Not bad if you ask me. We looked impressive against a Welsh side that came to play. It was a back-and-forth match, but in the end our boys pulled through, so let's talk about it...

Green Day once said "Wake Me Up When September ends", and y'know what, that implies that I want to sleep through September... That's not the case when the Men's National team are in action! I love watching these guys play, and it's even better when we win. We beat a European side on European soil for the first time in YEARS, and that's the type of momentum and results we need heading into 2026. So let's talk about the game...

The squad has DROPPED for our September friendlies against Romania (Sept. 5) and Wales (Sept. 9). There were 24 players to get the call so lets chat about the ones who are there and the ones who missed out, in anticipation for our matches in September!

The English Premier League season starts this Friday, so it's only right we do a few predictions for it! I even got the help of a friend... So let's go from 20 to 1 to see who's gonna finish where come May 2026!

It's amazing to be back and there's no better way than getting to sit down and chat with Forge FC Goalkeeper Dino Bontis. Dino has been around the game his entire life whether it was playing with Hamilton Sparta, the Youth Canadian National Team or the TFC Academy. Dino has been working hard and today we chat all about those moments that led him to his pro debut! We talk about his debut in-depth, his journey there, and Forge's great season so far.

Another cagey-CONCACAF type of match in our final group stage game in the Gold Cup 2025. It definitely wasn't pretty, 2 players sent off for El Salvador, a member of staff too, a missed Penalty for the Ice Man, but still in the end Canada gets the job done and that's what matters. A quarter-final match with Gutalmala awaits on June 28th, and Canada will have to be on their A-game, find that resilience and get the win. No time for slip-ups now, so let's talk about it.

Not a great outing for Canada in game 2 of the Gold Cup against Curacao. It's made all the more disappointing after their performance against Honduras. Many of the same issues reared their ugly heads again and the team, coaching staff and manager fails to learn from them each time. I love this team and always back them, but this game called for a bit of a rant... so lets talk about it.

A statement victory from Canada as they dismantled Honduras for 90 minutes and ended the game 6 goals to the good. If ever there was a great way to start a tournament, it was this. The boys need to build on this, continue building their chemistry, and hopefully build up momentum. Every player that stepped onto the pitch looked up for it, this as the perfect start to a campaign where a lot will be expected. It also leaves us with a lot to talk about! So lets!

Canadian Shield is done and dusted... does it count as the end of the trophy drought for Canada? I'm not too sure. But it has at least gotten us prepped for the Gold Cup! What is a shame is that the Ivory Coast match wasn't as good a performance for Canada as it was against Ukraine. But you know me, we're still going to talk about the game and then preview the Gold Cup! So let's talk about it!

Yes, the professional players play way too many games, and that schedule is extremely crammed... with that being said, I need more of the national team in my life. I love watching this team play, and it's the reason that Maple Footy even exists. The Canadian Shield a nice little precursor to our Gold Cup run, started well with a win against Ukraine. Canada looked strong, and 4-2 makes this game feel a bit closer than it was. Guys like Tajon Buchanan, Jonathan David, Maxime Crepeau and Luc De Fougerolles all starred. Last weekend the English Premier League wrapped up the season! I waited a little bit to look at the teams, what impressed me, what didn't. I break down each of the 20 teams involved in the season and let you know my thoughts. There's of course a lot to talk about so let's talk about it!

The Champions League Final is always looked at as the pinnacle of club football. And this year saw two extremely deserving teams playing for the honour. Inter fell short in every competition this season... sadly for them, the UCL Final redemption arc wasn't to be. They lost, and were embarrassed in the final 5-0... Something that has never been seen before. PSG, on the other hand, got over their UCL demons and were deserving winners. They had a great season, winning a treble and throughout the knockout stages were the best team. A proper historic night in football history...

April 24th, 2025, something special happened inside of BC Place. Count me as someone who is jealous for not being in Vancouver to witness this historic night. So many records on the night, broken. History books were tossed out and rewritten. It is a genuine honour and pleasure to have had Noah Jensen on the podcast. He's a player I've absolutely loved watching play for Forge pretty much since the day he arrived in Hamilton. 70 Episodes in... CRAZY! In this episode, I'm taking a look at the second weekend of CPL action, where Forge took on Pacific and left with 3 points. York hosted Halifax in a well-fought contest, and Ottawa offered the first true blowout of the season against Vancouver. But Terran Campbell wrote his name in the history books as he became the first player in league history to net 40. In the English Premier League, Liverpool pulled off a big win against the Hammers, Manchester City turned it around against Palace. The "United Derby" (if that's even a thing) was a one-sided affair...

New Premier League this past weekend so I decided to take the opportunity to talk some Canadian Footy. And yeah... that's another international break come and gone. Whilst the international didn't go the way we wanted it to, I do think that beating the USA to end it off will definitely ease the pain a little bit and help us get to the next set of internationals sooner. Despite our team's progress over the last number of years we still stumble at the final hump... getting that trophy, It was a disappointing night on March 20th as Canada suited up for their clash with Mexico, it was never going to be easy, but we didn't help ourselves either. Some strange choices, past mistakes not being rectified, and a reluctance to make some hard choices in personnel all proved to be a bad mix for our boys in Red and White. The first episode in a busy week for the Maple Footy Podcast! We talk about this matchday that just passed, and it feels like a natural extension of last week. Teams played pretty conservatively, no one wants to give up their spots and cost their teams. Lots of teams stumbled, and the relegation battle feels done and dusted (although it has for a while). Manchester City, Chelsea, and Bournemouth all slipped up in their pursuits for Europe. Liverpool stay top of the table and they didn't even play in the premier league! It's been a week to forget for...

Match week 28... not many to go now! Kind of crazy to think, but with crunch time of the season comes a lot of teams playing pretty conservatively, not wanting to make THE mistake that could cost their team the season. And it feels like that's what we got here. A lot of teams are just not willing to make that mistake. Not too many shock results this weekend, but Nottingham Forest do shock Manchester City 1-0! Outside of that a lot of talk focused on the European race because that's where it feels like things are heating up! So...

Arsenal strumbled again, and the relegation battlers all stumbled. The European race remains wide open as all sides are enjoying inconsistent form. Which is far from ideal... Big time match week for the Prem - lots of big results that'll have even bigger implications for the league table. Liverpool take advantage of an Arsenal slip-up, and Manchester United salvage a point against a familiar face and Everton. Chelsea well... they Chelsea'd and Aston Villa will be grateful for that. A big weekend at the bottom of the table too but only 1 side battling relegation will be happy. Massive weekend, with an extra long and exciting Maple Start! Let's talk about it all!

A weekend full of shock results was the theme this time out. Manchester City and United both had weekends to forget. Aston Villa, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Brighton all had some tough showings too. Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Arsenal were all flying high. Hey, even Tottenham won a game! Yeah I know... Wolves took advantage of their relegations dropping points, while Palace and Everton both enjoyed some impressive wins... so let's talk about it!

Matchday 23 is in the books, it's done and dusted. Some big and shocking results that will be felt throughout the table. Liverpool and Arsenal continue their title charges with wins over Ipswich and Wolves respectively. Bournemouth had a massive 5-0 over Nottingham Forest, and even Leicester got in on the winning fun. Chelsea were dreadful Tottenham too but with them, it's expected. Lot's to talk about so... lets!

Week 22 in the prem is over! So there's only one thing left to do before we say goodbye... we gotta discuss it! Chelsea and Manchester City got themselves back to winning ways. Arsenal blew a 2-0 lead, and Liverpool left it extremely late. Each of the bottom four all failed to capitalize on each other's misery and so of the middle pack of, Fulham, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth all continued to impress.

Episode 53! Matchday 21... the midweek matches! These last couple of weeks have been chaotic in the prem, and that, of course, did not change with this match day either. Lots of dropped points at the top for everyone not named Arsenal and Newcastle! And even more points were dropped at the bottom of the table. Which is not good at all during this last half the season! So it offers a lot to talk about... so let's talk!

2024 is over and with it means we need to do a recap as everyone does this time of year! Canada enjoyed a great year in football, whether it was our men's Copa run, our women having to fight controversy, the CPL enjoying a great year, Canadians in league play found lot so of success too. It was a great year and I've got so much to talk about. 11 pages of notes, 5618 words, and an hour & 18 minutes. So let's talk about it, let's talk about 2024.

Well, we're now through the season and the table feels like it's really shaped out. We know who's in the thick of the relegation battle, who's chasing Europe and who could be lifting the trophy at the end of it all. A lot of teams at the top dropped points, where mid to low-level teams got some massive points! So let's talk about it!

Halfway throught the 2024/25 season... where'd all the time go? They grow up so friggin fast! But it's the first day of the year and the 50th episode of the Maple Footy Podcast! It was a big week for Liverpool as they destroyed West Ham, Chelsea continued to be stuck in the trenches but not quite as bad as Manchester United. There was a load of draws as well but still even those brought big results and big performances! So let's talk about it...

Week 18 of the prem... nearly halfway through the season and my only question is... HOW? It feels like we just started but now the boxing day fixtures have been played and there's still loads to talk about. Wolves with a big win, Forest continue to impress, Villa stumble thanks to a red card that probably shouldn't have been. Chelsea suffer just their 3rd loss of the season, Manchester City and Manchester United continue their poor runs of form. Liverpool still sit pretty at the top of the table. So let's discuss it all!

Week 17 of the prem and it's the last one before Christmas! It feels like some teams were the stars on top of the tree while others perhaps got a lump of coal. No game showed this more than Tottenham and Liverpool, a gulf in class between two sides. Then there are teams like Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, and Villa who continued their great seasons with great results. Opposite of that both Manchesters and Leicester had some days at the office. Chelsea also faltered whilst Aresnal made up some ground in the title race... so let's talk about it!

Week 16 is over and in the books! Liverpool and Fulham entertained everyone! Chelsea racked up a big win and find themselves in the title race! Arsenal faltered again. Ipswich got themselves a massive win. Wolves and Saints both parted ways with their managers, they'll hope that'll get their seasons back on track. The Machester derby also took place, turns out Manchester is red. There's a lot to talk about... so lets!

Week 15 is over and done with! Still loads to talk about as we're in the biggest part of the season! Chelsea and Spurs didn't fail to disappoint everyone! Well unless you're a Spurs fan! Elsewhere Arsenal, City, and United all faltered. The middle pack continues to impress, I'm talking Brentford, Fulham, Forest, Villa, and Brighton. A lot to discuss, so let's!

Week 14 of the Prem is in the books and games just don't stop coming! Chelsea and Arsenal both find themselves level on points separated just by a few goals. Liverpool's lead at the top was cut by 2 points after a draw to Newcastle. Where Manchester City and Aston Villa both ended their winless runs!

Week 13 of the Premier League was filled with massive moments, as we will continue to see from now until the end of the season, I'm sure! Some big moments at the top and bottom of the table, Liverpool took 3 points off of Manchester City, whose downward spiral continues. The other half of Manchester got their first win, and it was a big WON (one). Elsewhere, Aston Villa seemed to be imitating City as they fell to Chelsea. Justin Kluivert made history and Schade announced himself on the scene. There's a lot to talk about... so let's talk!

Week 12 of the Premier League was filled with massive moments and a lot of talking points! Wolves seem to be turning around their luck while City has taken their place. Losing 5 straight for the first time under Pep. Elsewhere, Chelsea destroyed Leicester, although the score line wouldn't indicate that, but the result left the Foxes sacking their manager. Liverpool continued their fine form at the top, Manchester United started a new era and Arsenal started life after the break in fine fashion. Lots to talk about, so let's!

The November international break has now come and gone and with it comes the end of Canadian Internationals for the year. Looking ahead we already know we have a date with Mexico in the Concacaf Nations League Semi-Final in March and the Gold Cup, which'll be starting in June. But in this Quarter Final Canada got the job done in convincing fashion. They gave us a lot to talk about... so let's!

The November international break is here! Canada are in CONCACAF Nations League action in a 2 legged affair with Suriname. Canada got the win, but it was certainly not the victory a lot of people would have been hoping for or expecting. But regardless a dub is a dub, big moment from the returning Junior Hoilett that takes Canada to the second leg with a 1-0 advantage at home in Toronto!

Week 11 of the Premier League is in the books. Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the table by 5 points as Manchester City lost their Fourth game in a row in all competitions for the first time EVER under Pep. Manchester United got a big win, whilst Arsenal and Chelsea battled to a 1-1 draw. Ipswich and Wolves also got their first wins of the season. So there was a lot to talk about. Without any further ado let's talk about it!

The CPL Playoffs come to an end as 4-time Champs Forge FC travel from Hamilton to Calgary to take on Cavalry. It's the third time in six years these teams have met in the final. This time though Cavalry proved it was 3rd time lucky as they were able to dethrone Forge FC from their grip on the North Star Cup. There's a lot to talk about and breakdown about the game so let's get into it!

Liverpool picked up points where Arsenal and Manchester City both left the weekend with zero. Newcastle and Bournemouth played spoilers to both of them. Which is no easy task as Forge were in search for their sixth straight final appearance, it was a back-and-forth match that had it's fair share of back-and-forth action... Let's talk about it!

In our other match Cavalry and Forge had a rematch of the 2023 final almost a year to the day. This time however there was a bit of a different outcome... Lot's to talk about, let's get to it.

The CPL Playoffs have officially gotten underway! Exciting times for Canadian football, and if you're a York United fan! They got their first-ever playoff win, and it came against the 2021 Champs Pacific. Pacific would have wanted to replicate that 2021 run, but sadly, it didn't go to plan for them or their supporters... so let's talk about it and preview the games for this coming Sunday. Atletico Ottawa and York United, then Forge and Cavalry... let's gooo!

The October International break came and went. Our men's national team only had 1 match, but it was a high-quality, well-contested one with our CONCACAF counterparts, Panama! Some big moments and big talking points, you already know we love talking about the national team, so let's get into it!

Another week of Premier League Football and another weekend where I'm left thanking Chelsea for signing Cole Palmer. The Coldest Man in Stamford Bridge managed to become the first player in Prem History to grab 4 goals in one half. Big results for teams like Liverpool, Everton, and Arsenal mixed with some slip-ups for Leicester and more stagnation for Southampton as you can see there's a lot to talk about. Another week of Premier League Football and there were more time match ups. Chelsea beat West Ham 3-0 (YESSSSSSS), a big 3-0 win for Liverpool and a lot of talking in Machester City vs Arsenal... so let's talk about it!

Our international break comes to a close. Despite a victory against the States, we can't replicate that win but we did do enough to earn a draw against Mexico. It sure wasn't the most entertaining match we've ever seen or covered here on Maple Footy, but we still support our boys no matter how entertaining they are. So let's get into it!
