The Wellington Phoenix have confirmed the signing of All Whites defender Bill Tuiloma on a two-and-a-half year deal. 

It's a long-awaited homecoming for the 30 year old, who has played more than 200 professional matches in France and the United States. 

Tuiloma will have to wait for the A-League's mid-season registration window to open next Wednesday before he is able to make his club debut. 

He told Piney he’s excited to get on the pitch and hopefully perform for the team.

New Zealand’s community sport organisations and physical clubs seem to be on their way out.  

Fewer people are getting involved, and more and more clubs, courts, and spaces are closing down or deteriorating.

New Zealand’s sports clubs are facing a critical deadline.  

By the 5th of April, 2026, all incorporated community sport organisations must re-register under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. 

Less than half the country’s 7,000 clubs have registered so far, and failure to do so will result in voluntary dissolution.

Former New Zealand middle and long-distance runner Rod Dixon was made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the New Year 2026 Honours for services to athletics.

Dixon is a four-time Olympian, winning the bronze medal in the 1500 metres at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

He won the New York City Marathon in 1983 making him the only athlete in history to have won the New York Marathon and medalled in the Olympic 1500m.

The NZ Breakers are set to honour four-time ANBL champion Tom Abercrombie.

They will retire the iconic number 10 singlet Abercrombie famously wore throughout his 429-game career.

Head coach Clark Laidlaw anticipates a seamless return to the Hurricanes for Jason Holland. 

The 53-year-old, who led the team for four of his eight years with the Canes' prior to his role with the All Blacks, is back as an assistant for the 20-26 Super Rugby Pacific season.

The 28-year-old has signed on for three years with French club Perpignan, leaving the Crusaders after eight seasons with the side. 

Reece has played 37 tests for New Zealand and is Super Rugby’s all-time leading try scorer with 66 tries. 

He told Piney it makes him so proud and happy knowing that he’s given everything to all of the teams he’s been a part of.

Earlier this week cricket fans were saddened to hear that legendary English batsman Robin Smith had passed away. 

Smith played 62 tests between 1988 and 1966, and died in Peth Australia, at the age of 62.

The off-field wrangling over whether New Zealand adopts a franchise Twenty20 cricket model continues. 

A group of fifteen former internationals signed an open letter raising concerns over the viability of NZ20, a privately backed T20 league.

Coaching guru Wayne Goldsmith told Piney the question is whether what we're seeing is a team building towards greatness in two years, or a team that’s lost the plot.  

Once that’s been nailed down, he says, that’s when you figure out what needs to be changed, when, and how you’ll know if that works. 

The New Zealand Olympic Committee are welcoming the flexibility that comes with potentially hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2034. 

They've declared an expression of interest to bring the event to the country for the first time since 1990 in Auckland, with the recent scaling back of the event making it a more attractive proposition. 

NZOC CEO Nicki Nicol told Piney it would be a fantastic opportunity, not just for the athletes, but also for the fans and the country. 

“I can remember 1990 and how it lifted the country.”

Travis Head has delivered a pristine plate of Baz-ball against its creators to lead Australia to a one-nil Ashes cricket series lead over England.

Opening the batting due to Usman Khawaja's injury issues, Head smashed a century in 69 deliveries, smashing 123 off 83 balls to help the hosts to the 205-run target.

Daryl Mitchell’s seemingly endless good form continues. 

After leading the Black Caps to an ODI win over the West Indies with a big century, he moved to #1 in the ODI World Batting Rankings.

A chaotic opening day of the first Ashes cricket test between Australia and England in Perth has seen 19 wickets fall – the most on the first day of an Ashes test since 1909. 

England were bundled out for 172 before Australia were kept to 123 for 9 at stumps – trailing by 49 runs. 

The day also saw Australian opener Usman Khawaja forced to bat at number four after being off the field for the end of England's innings with back spasms.
